A Latvian deputy is facing legal action for speaking Russian in the Saeima.

Andrey Pagor was accused of “violating parliamentary ethics” after a video clip in Russian, filmed in the plenary hall, was published. In the recording, Pagor discussed the agenda of the first session of the 15th convocation of the Saeima. The post later disappeared from his account.

Members of the Presidium
proposed initiating a case for violating ethical norms.

According to Article 18 of the Constitution of Latvia, parliamentarians are obligated to support the Latvian language as the sole state language. Additionally, the complaints are related to Article 18 of the Code of Parliamentary Ethics, which stipulates the use of the state language when communicating with colleagues and the public within the Saeima building.
