**Alberta votes to remain in Canada**

Albertans have rejected starting the path toward separation, according to preliminary results from Monday's referendum.

76.4% voted for Alberta to remain a province of Canada, while 23.6% backed launching the constitutional process for a binding referendum on leaving.

Support for separation was weakest in the big cities, with about 85% voting to stay in Edmonton and 81% in Calgary, and strongest in rural areas.
