** "Merz must go!": Germany's Gen Z takes to the streets against the government

Youth movement "Gen Z regelt" ("Gen Z handles it") held protests in more than 20 German cities today against Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government.

The biggest rally was at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, where police counted about 4,200 people. Some came in Halloween costumes, others with GDR flags, hammers and sickles, and banners demanding Merz resign. One young protester told a streamer the GDR was "the most peaceful German state" that ever existed.

According to Bild, around 3,000 people marched in Stuttgart, 1,900 in Erfurt and 230 in Rostock. In Hanover, protesters chanted "Merz must go!" outside the main station. Tagesspiegel reports burning barricades in Hamburg.

Their demands: lower living costs, more money for schools, climate protection, and no to conscription and Germany's massive rearmament spending.

The movement started only a few weeks ago with school blockades in Berlin, inspired by the youth protests in France.
