**Netanyahu's Likud asks to extend voting hours as record turnout alarms the right**

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party has filed a request with Israel's Central Elections Committee to keep polls open past 22:00. The ultra-Orthodox Shas party backed the request, asking for an extra hour.

Turnout reached 55.7% by 4 p.m., the highest at that hour since records began in 1973, with especially strong participation in Arab communities and left-leaning areas. Meanwhile, turnout in several of Likud's biggest strongholds from 2022 is running below the national average.

Shas leader Arye Deri admitted he was very worried about apathy among Haredi and right-wing voters, calling the high turnout on the left and among Arab voters deeply concerning.

Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot's Yashar party, Netanyahu's main challenger, opposed the request, accusing Likud of laying the groundwork to challenge the election result after Netanyahu spent the day claiming his opponents were trying to steal the vote.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the committee has turned down the request for now but will reassess later. Anyone in line by 22:00 will still be allowed to vote.
