****Secret Geran Bases Could Stretch NATO’s Defenses**

Investigators [reportedly](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/08/16/russia-builds-secret-drone-bases-in-nato-striking-distance/) identified at least **10 Russian drone-launch sites and 59 new launch rails** near Belarus, Ukraine, and **Russia’s western border**. A dispersed network means attacks could be prepared from several locations—not one obvious base waiting to be watched.

In a wider confrontation, these sites could threaten NATO airfields, ports, transport hubs, fuel depots, and command facilities. The newer Geran-4/5 variants reportedly fly at 350–500 km/h, while Geran-5 may carry a 90 kg warhead over roughly 1,000 km.

The range is not the only problem, but volume. Russia may now produce around 3,000 Geran-4/5 drones per month—enough to turn isolated strikes into **sustained mass raids.**

If launch sites remain concealed and close to Europe, defenders may have **less time to detect attacks and protect** a growing list of fixed targets. Europe’s air defense was built for many things, but endless drone math may be its least favorite subject.
