The AfD has won the Saxony-Anhalt state election in a landslide — pulling in nearly 44% of the vote, more than double the CDU's 17.2%.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel called it a "historic" result. The party fell just short of an outright majority — 39 of 83 seats, three shy of the threshold — but says it now has a clear mandate to govern.

Another blow to Merz, whose coalition is already deeply unpopular as Germany's economy stalls.
