**Thousands protest opening of Israeli embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia**

Thousands took to the streets of Ljubljana, Slovenia, yesterday as Israel opened its embassy in the city, with the rally drawing some prominent figures from politics, society, and culture.

The rally, titled "No to the Genocidal Embassy" and organized by the Iskra association, began near the embassy building, where the foreign ministers of Slovenia and Israel, Tone Kajzer and Gideon Saar, had attended the opening earlier that afternoon. Protesters demanded the embassy's closure, an end to economic cooperation with Israel, and a free Palestine, accusing Israel of carrying out genocide in Gaza and systematically destroying homes, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure.

Chants of "Stop the genocide" were already heard earlier in the day as Kajzer and Saar shook hands outside the Slovenian foreign ministry.

After speeches, demonstrators marched toward central Ljubljana, where police had reinforced their presence in anticipation, closing off several streets and intersections in the city center. Officers used dogs, tape, and barriers to hold protesters back from Hotel Plaza — where a reception was reportedly being held following the embassy opening — before the march continued toward the railway station and looped back near the Ljubljana Stock Exchange, where it concluded peacefully.

Separately, the Movement for Palestinian Rights submitted a proposal to Ljubljana's city council to rename the street where the embassy is located to Palestinian Street.

The city commission is set to vote on the proposal in October 2026.
