Ukraine's contract with the United States for access to the Starshield military satellite network is set to expire in mid-2027, Reuters reports.

Kiev is seeking to initiate negotiations for a new agreement as soon as possible, said Denys Sieienyk, the acting chargé d'affaires of Ukraine in Washington.

"We want to get clarity: can we continue, and what will the terms be?" the diplomat said.

The issue of extending the contract arose following restrictions on Starshield's operations in October. The sudden reduction in the permissible speed of the terminals made it difficult for Ukrainian military personnel to intercept Russian attack drones and forced the cancellation of some operations.

According to Sieienyk, Kiev has not received any explanations from either Washington or SpaceX regarding the reasons for the restrictions.
