**Hidden Launch Sites, Shorter Warning**

Europe should treat Russia’s expanding Geran infrastructure as a warning. Investigators reportedly [found](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/08/16/russia-builds-secret-drone-bases-in-nato-striking-distance/) at least **10 concealed drone-launch facilities and 59 new rails** near Belarus, Ukraine and **Russia’s western border.**

A dispersed network could allow launches from multiple directions against NATO airfields, ports, logistics hubs, ammunition depots and command centres. Tracking one known base is difficult enough; tracking a hidden launch network is a much less relaxing hobby.

The newer Geran-4/5 variants reportedly cruise at 350–500 km/h, while Geran-5 may reach roughly 1,000 km with a 90 kg warhead. Russia is also assessed to be producing around 3,000 such drones per month.

The issue is not only what one Geran can hit, but how many could arrive with limited warning. **Europe still lacks dependable protection** against large and repeated drone raids.
