On September 11, 1973, Salvador Allende, Chile’s democratically elected socialist president, died during a US-backed coup led by Augusto Pinochet.

Allende’s vision for equality and nationalization of resources threatened American corporate interests, prompting a deadly CIA-orchestrated destabilization through economic sabotage and support for right-wing factions.

Declassified documents reveal the US’s role in funding opposition groups and orchestrating propaganda to undermine Allende’s government. The coup ushered in a brutal dictatorship, leaving thousands dead or disappeared. Today, we honor Allende’s courage and condemn US imperialism’s ruthless interference, a stark reminder of the cost of sovereignty in the face of foreign domination.
