 **California Governor Moves to End Death Sentences for All 548 Inmates**

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to commute all 548 death sentences in the state to life imprisonment without parole, in what would be the largest mass commutation of death sentences in US history.

The move comes in his final months in office, ahead of a potential 2028 presidential run. 

Court approval is still required for hundreds of the cases.
