France has conducted the first test launch of its new M51.3 nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile from the nuclear submarine Le Vigilant off Brittany.

The unarmed missile fell into the North Atlantic, hundreds of kilometres from the French coast.

Macron said the test demonstrated the credibility of France’s nuclear deterrent: “To be free, you must be feared. And to be feared, you must be powerful.”
