Russia’s military leadership has been reviewing its military presence and capabilities in the Arctic, amid growing NATO activity in the region.

 The development comes shortly after Norway expanded its Finnmark Brigade, adding an artillery battalion, air-defence battery and communications company. 

The brigade is based in Norway’s Arctic north, near Russia’s border.

Russia has long viewed the Arctic as strategically important, particularly because its Northern Fleet and strategic submarines operate in the region.
