A fire at the Savannah River National Laboratory in South Carolina triggered an emergency after an unfiltered radiological release was reported, according to [WRDW](https://www.wrdw.com/2026/10/28/emergency-response-activities-underway-srs/).

The fire was extinguished, and subsequent radiation surveys detected no contamination, site officials said. The emergency has been lifted.

The Savannah River complex, originally built to produce plutonium and tritium for US nuclear weapons, continues to support the country's nuclear deterrent.
