 **Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo for his first state visit to Egypt in a decade, as Cairo deepens ties with Beijing while seeking greater strategic autonomy from Washington.**

Egypt, despite receiving about &#036;1.3 billion annually in US military aid, last month hosted its second annual exercises with China, including the first deployment of Chinese J-16 fighters to Africa. Chinese investment is also expanding across Egyptian ports, manufacturing, clean energy and satellite technology.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described Egypt and China as partners strengthening the Global South.
