President Donald Trump has [declared](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/08/declaring-a-national-emergency-to-secure-the-united-states-bulk-power-system) a **national emergency over foreign threats to the US bulk-power system, citing the risk that foreign-made grid equipment could contain digital backdoors or other vulnerabilities enabling sabotage, cyberattacks or remote disruption.**

The executive order allows the government to block the acquisition, import, transfer or installation of foreign-produced power equipment — including transformers, inverters, generators, battery storage systems and industrial control systems — where the Energy Secretary determines that equipment, associated critical software, firmware or remote-access capabilities linked to covered foreign entities pose an unacceptable security risk. Existing equipment may also be isolated, secured, replaced or removed.
