Russia has warned Japan over the deployment of US Typhon mid-range missile systems on Kyushu, saying their presence poses a direct threat to Russia’s Far Eastern security.

Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko raised the issue with Japanese Ambassador Akira Muto on September 16, warning that continued deployment of intermediate-range missile systems and expanding US-Japanese military activity would prompt “compensating measures” from Moscow. Russia had already lodged a formal protest over the Typhon deployment on August 31.

The systems were deployed at Kanoya Air Base for the Valiant Shield and Orient Shield exercises. Tokyo says the deployment is temporary and that Typhon will leave Kanoya by mid-October, although the systems are expected to remain in Japan in storage at a US military base.
