**Russia’s grid-connected data centers have reached roughly 5 GW of capacity — on the order of the entire installed generating capacity of a country such as Armenia. Deputy Energy Minister Pyotr Konyushenko said most are concentrated around Moscow and St. Petersburg, where the bulk of new connection requests are also being filed.**

That concentration is placing growing strain on regional power systems and could delay new connections unless additional power plants and transmission infrastructure are built. The Energy Ministry is urging data-center developers to prioritize their own generation, including solar, wind with storage and coal-based power.

Data centers’ share of Russian electricity consumption rose from 1.4% in 2022 to 2.2% in 2025 and is expected to reach 2.4% this year. Within five years, total power demand from high-tech computing centers could reach **15.3 GW**.
