Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met Mossad Director Roman Gofman in Jordan on Sunday in an effort to lower tensions between Syria and Israel, [Axios](https://www.axios.com/2026/08/23/syria-israel-turkey-airbase-bombing) reported, citing two sources familiar with the meeting.

The talks came days after Israel struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria. Israel said the attack was intended to prevent a Turkish military buildup at the facility, while Damascus said there were no plans for a permanent Turkish military presence and that work at the base was limited to restoring it for the Syrian Air Force.
