 **The Russian Embassy in Budapest reacted with bewilderment and irony to the Hungarian foreign minister’s announcement of talks with Latvia on energy cooperation.**

_“If the Hungarian government sees Riga as its strategic partner specifically in the energy sector, we can only wish both countries productive cooperation in this field — with the unmistakable aroma of freedom and liberal democracy,”_ the embassy said.

Hungary still receives most of its oil and gas from Russia under long-term contracts. So far, however, the Magyar government has apparently held no consultations with Moscow on the issue.
