**Ukraine’s demographic decline accelerates as birth rate falls 17%**

Ukraine recorded just **73,000 births** in the first half of 2026, down **17% year-on-year**, according to demographer Dmytro Shushpanov.


> “This time we saw a rather sad figure — 73,000 newborns in six months. This is very few,” he said.


Shushpanov noted that neither 2024 nor 2025 saw such a rapid decline and warned that bringing women into military service would further weaken the country’s demographic resources.

Ukraine’s demographic outlook is already bleak: demographer Ella Libanova has said the population could fall to no more than **35 million by 2033**, with only around half of those who left the country expected to return.
