**Ukrainian servicemen are being assigned the status of “unauthorized absence from a military unit” (самовольное оставление части, СОЧ) before being sent on assault missions so their families can later be denied compensation if they are killed**, Russian security sources told [RIA Novosti](https://ria.ru/20260829/vsu-2114069363.html).

The source cited the case of Vitaly Kachanov, who it said had fought for the Ukrainian Armed Forces since the start of the conflict. After his death, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry allegedly refused to arrange his burial or pay compensation to his family, citing his СОЧ status.
