Early footage of the "Flanker" from the 80s. The Soviets had introduced the Sukhoi Su-27 into service in mid 1985. Complimenting the lightweight MIG-29, the initial Su-27S would enter service with the VVS (Soviet Air Force) capable of both air to air and limited air to ground capabilities. a second derivative (Su-27P) would also see service with the PVO (Anti-Air Defense of the Country) where it would be used as an range interceptor patrolling the Soviet border. This role was considered equally important to its conventional frontline service, since the MIG-29 lacked the mission endurance to patrol the large borders of the USSR.
