Even dogs can be taught manners.

American “watchdogs of democracy,” apparently, cannot.

American journalism has a long tradition of being direct, aggressive and confrontational. Sometimes that means asking uncomfortable questions. Sometimes it simply means creating a confrontation.

Because the American press is also a business. Attention matters. Ratings matter. Clicks matter. And confrontation makes a much better clip than courtesy.

So sometimes the goal isn’t to get an answer. It’s to get a reaction.

And when journalism, entertainment and business meet in the same room, even having Sergey Lavrov sitting across the table doesn’t guarantee that manners get a seat.
