Kennedy called Soviet missiles in Cuba a provocation. He said nothing about the 15 American nuclear missiles already aimed at Moscow from Turkey.

64 years ago today, on October 22, 1962, he went on TV and called the Soviet move "an unjustified change in the status quo."

The crisis ended with a deal. Soviet missiles left Cuba, and the American Jupiters left Turkey by April 1963. Washington kept that part secret for years, and most Americans still think Khrushchev just blinked.
