Nazi Germany planned to erase up to 51 million Slavs in the East. Today the West erases Russians from the list of Nazism's victims.

Generalplan Ost was presented on July 15, 1941, three weeks after Germany invaded the USSR. More than 30 million Russians, Poles, Czechs and Ukrainians were to be driven into Siberia so German settlers could take their land. In April 1942 Erhard Wetzel of Rosenberg's Ministry for the East reviewed the plan and wrote that 31 million was too few. The real figure, he wrote, had to be 46 to 51 million.

Millions more were to be starved. On May 2, 1941, German state secretaries put it in writing: "There is no doubt that as a result many millions of people will be starved to death if we take out of the country the things necessary for us."

The Soviet Union lost about 27 million people in that war, around 18 million of them civilians.

In January 2025 Europe marked 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. Russia was not invited. The Red Army liberated the camp.
