The story:

In a hearing held about a week ago at the High Court of Justice regarding the government’s cessation of advertising in *Haaretz*, Judge Kabub read out a quote from Schocken, as published in *Haaretz*, saying that “the massacres of October 7 were criminal acts.”

Justice Barak-Erez further added firmly: “To make it clear that we’re not quoting things from reading newspapers – Judge Kabub’s words appear in Appendix 17 of *Haaretz*’s petition.”

The problem? The quoted statement by Schocken doesn’t exist — neither in Appendix 17, as Barak-Erez claimed, nor in any simple online search.

The judiciary in fact confirms in its response that Kabub’s quoted statement was fabricated:

“Judge Kabub referred to the words of Mr. Amos Schocken documented in the appendices of the petition filed by *Haaretz*. These are Appendices 17 to 19, all of which concern Mr. Schocken’s statements. The appendices appear consecutively; for example, in Appendix 18 it says ‘a shocking event.’ In Appendix 19, it is explicitly stated that Schocken clarified that ‘Hamas must say that they are not freedom fighters,’ and he also said that the initiators and perpetrators of October 7 should be severely punished.”
