The terrorist co-pilot waited until the plane was relatively close to Israel. It is possible that he planned to kill the senior pilot and crash the plane into a tower or other strategic target in Israel. In such a scenario, we could have been facing an event similar in style and scale to the attacks on the Twin Towers.
