Democrats Win Majority in House and Senate

According to preliminary results, the Democrats regained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in yesterday's midterm elections. The party picked up at least 25 seats in the House and seven in the Senate, many in districts that voted for Trump in 2024 and in states considered Republican strongholds.Multiple House district pickups for Democrats happened in California, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin. Two Texas districts that were redrawn last year to favor Republicans in fact flipped for Democrats, while a handful more remained Democratic despite less favorable district boundaries. In California, where Democrats redistricted in their favor, three seats were picked up. In the Senate, junior Senators will hail from Texas for the first time in more than 30 years and Kansas for the first time in almost 90 years. Democrats also picked up one Senate seat each in Maine, South Carolina, North Carolina, Iowa and Ohio.Polling aggregators initially projected five House district currently or previously held by Democrats likely flipping Republican: Three in Texas and Tennessee affected by Republican voluntary redistricting and AL-02, which is being taken over by a Republican incumbent from a different district after the weakening of the Voting Rights Act by a Supreme Court decision in June allowed an embattled 2023 election map to take effect. In the end, all of the districts remained Democratic despite the redistricting efforts. Another district with a Democratic incumbent redrawn by Republicans, FL-09, is still in play as of publishing time, as is the original one affected by the aforementioned Supreme Court decision (LA-06) – both with Democrats in the lead at the time of publishing, however. The same is true for an ME-02, which was seen as a potential pickup for Republicans due to the Democratic incumbent retiring. This chart shows the projected number of seats won per party in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections.
