**A TRAGEDY IN THREE ACTS**
**ALMOST SHAKESPEAREAN**

**ACT ONE**
 **DENMARK**

For the past few weeks, a new horror story has been doing the rounds in the European press:  Russia is supposedly having **increasing difficulty recruiting people into the army.**

Fewer people are willing to sign contracts, and the recruitment pool is apparently drying up. Every now and then, we are even treated to rather colourful tales of prospective **contract soldiers (!)** being grabbed off the streets and forcibly sent off to fight.

And then, a few days ago,  **Berlingske** [decided to gather all](https://omny.fm/shows/pilestraede-berlingskes-nyhedspodcast/00e5aed1-8301-4698-adfe-b4c6008dd87c) this magnificence into one grand picture.

The result was suitably epic…

Apparently, Russia has already prepared the infrastructure for **another major mobilisation** and practically has its finger hovering over the button.

And it could supposedly be announced **immediately after the State Duma elections** — in other words, as early as next week.

But since Vladimir Putin publicly denies that there will be another mobilisation, a wonderful term has been found for what is supposedly happening:

**“COVERT MOBILISATION”**

So there will apparently be a mobilisation — only somehow nobody will notice it.

Hundreds of thousands of people — **and nobody notices a thing.** 

Then it gets even more interesting.

The article features a map showing the supposed preparation and deployment of troops, with  **Belarusian training grounds** among the possible locations.

Put the whole picture together and you get an almost ready-made military epic:
 contract soldiers are running out;
 Russia is preparing hundreds of thousands more troops;
 a new wave of mobilisation could begin after the elections;
 some of those mobilised could be trained in Belarus.

And then where
 Ukraine?
 Towards the Baltic states?

In a good European horror story, those are merely details.

**But they certainly managed to scare everyone properly.**

**ACT TWO**
 **SWEDEN**

Naturally, the Swedes couldn’t resist joining in.

 **SVT was already **[warning](https://www.svt.se/nyheter/utrikes/ryssland-kan-mobilisera-politiskt-kansligt-for-putin)** back in the summer** that there were supposedly increasing signs that Russia was preparing another major mobilisation.

The reason is much the same: the front needs manpower, while supposedly fewer and fewer people are willing to sign military contracts voluntarily.

SVT was already talking about the possibility of **up to 500,000 (!) people being mobilised after the September elections.**

Admittedly, it carefully added:
 **Moscow denies all of this.**

But when the story is this frightening, why spoil it with minor details?

** ACT THREE

 The **main — and only — source** behind all this astonishingly detailed epistolary gymnastics in the Scandinavian press…
