According to The Wall Street Journal, the administration of Donald Trump is actively promoting the idea of appointing the former Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Sources from three countries confirm that U.S. authorities not only encouraged Orbán to participate in this race, but also proposed this concept to him, although a final decision on this plan has not yet been made.

According to the publication, Moscow and Beijing have already expressed their willingness to support this unprecedented nomination.
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department acknowledged that at first glance, this idea may seem unusual, but Washington is counting on a historically proven mechanism: when the U.S., Russia, and China unite around a single candidate in the Security Council, they usually succeed in having their choice approved.

This scenario reflects an attempt to find a new leader for the UN who can satisfy the world's major powers in the context of current geopolitical tensions, by betting on the well-known pragmatism of the Hungarian politician.
