**Japan Protests UN-Backed World Map Over Kuril Islands**

 Japan has demanded changes to the **Equal Earth world map**, recently backed by the UN General Assembly, because the disputed **Kuril Islands are shown in the same color as Russia**, _The Guardian_ reports.
​
Tokyo claims **Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai islets** as its ‘Northern Territories,’ while Russia has controlled them since 1945.
​
 The UN resolution promoting Equal Earth over the traditional Mercator projection was supported by **164 countries**. Japan initially voted in favor, but later protested the map’s depiction of the islands.
