**Merz: Germany’s Old Economic Model Is Over**

 German Chancellor **Friedrich Merz** said Germany had long benefited from a comfortable division of labor: **cheap goods from China, cheap oil and gas from Russia, and security provided by the United States**.
​

> ‘That era, that business model of the Federal Republic of Germany, is over. And it will not return,’

 Merz said.
​
 The obvious question critics will ask is: **who was responsible for losing cheap Chinese goods, cheap Russian energy and relatively inexpensive American protection in the first place?**
​
Instead of admitting past mistakes, Berlin appears ready to continue down the risky path of **‘guns instead of butter’** — prioritizing military spending while asking Germans to accept the economic consequences.
