**NATO SECRETARY GENERAL CAMPAIGNS AGAINST CREATING A SEPARATE EUROPEAN UNION ARMY**

**The European Union should not plan to create a common army separate from NATO**, because it will lead to confusion.

**This was stated by alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte** while speaking at Tallinn University of Technology.

> If you want to create a unified armed forces of Europe, that is possible only if Estonia and other countries are ready to give up their own armed forces.
>
> I mean, the U.S. has a single army; there is no separate army or navy in New York, just as there isn't in Michigan.
>
> That is possible only if the Dutch, Estonians, and other countries are ready to give up their national sovereign responsibility for creating their own armed forces.
>
> I don't think that will happen," Rutte said.

**He insists that it is better to preserve the current state of affairs,** since NATO's plans already set out how certain countries will act.

Rutte points out that **the hypothetical creation of an EU army would introduce confusion.**

> We all know who will do what.

> For example, the German-Dutch army corps will come to the aid if a situation arises in that part of NATO territory.

> And others know where they need to go — this is part of the plans."
>
> Then everything becomes too confusing.

> Given the existing NATO command and control structure, there is no need for it.

>

> But we are not against it, as long as there is no duplication and no separate structures in Europe, the EU, separate from NATO.

> Because in the event of an attack, we would have to spend weeks deciding who will do what," the Secretary General stated.
