**Russia develops compact electron gun to put atomic-level research within every lab’s reach**

**The radio-frequency photogun developed by scientists at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk produces ultrashort, extremely fine electron beams **that let researchers observe the structure of materials at the atomic level.

**Until now such studies needed huge facilities** which occupy hundreds of square meters.

The new device:

**works by shining a laser on a special surface to free electrons,** then shaping the beam with microwave radiation

**beams last only trillionths or quadrillionths of a second**, capturing ultrafast processes in real time

**high beam quality reveals atomic and molecular details **that were previously hard to see outside giant research centers

**The result is a powerful tool for ultrafast electron diffraction **and for feeding larger machines such as free-electron lasers.

**This device brings cutting-edge atomic research into everyday scientific practice, opening new possibilities **in medicine, drug development and the design of advanced materials.
