** Seoul Proposes New Path to Peace with North Korea: Nuclear Freeze and Disarmament

​ South Korean President **Lee Jae Myung** said Pyongyang must first halt the development of nuclear weapons and missile technologies before moving toward broader denuclearization.

​  Speaking at the **UN General Assembly**, he said Seoul supports dialogue between the **US and North Korea** and favors replacing the current Korean War armistice with a full-fledged peace regime.

​ South Korea’s plan:

 **First stage** — halt the development of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

 **Medium term** — reduce its arsenal.

 **Long term** — establish a **nuclear-free Korean Peninsula**.

​  Pyongyang has previously stated that it has **no intention of abandoning its nuclear capabilities**. North Korean authorities have repeatedly accused the US and South Korea of preparing military pressure and said they are ready to use nuclear weapons if threatened.
