Ukrainian forces have begun using SmartLITE Sirius 16x16 satellite terminals made by Israeli company HiSKY in strikes on targets in mainland Russia.
HiSKY has no satellite constellation of its own. Its terminals connect to other operators' satellites under agreements the company has signed with them.
The system is no direct Starlink equivalent. Its bandwidth is far lower (the manufacturer's spec sheet lists up to 2 Mbps on geostationary satellites), which limits real-time control. But it's enough to transmit compressed video, change a drone's flight path and select targets.
The key problem, is that unlike Starlink, which Russia has restricted from working over its territory, this system does work over mainland Russia.
Ukraine's FP-1 kamikaze drones were reportedly being upgraded to carry these terminals.
On the positive side, Russia's Volna-Kupol-Garant electronic warfare system can jam the Israeli terminals too.
The recovered units' labels show they were manufactured in Marcianise, Italy.
