🇦🇷🇬🇧 Argentina gives London two weeks to halt Falklands oil project

Argentine President Javier Milei has issued the UK a two-week ultimatum to stop work on the Sea Lion offshore oilfield near the disputed Falkland (Malvinas) Islands, a project run by Israel's Navitas Petroleum and Britain's Rockhopper Exploration.

If London does not comply by around 12 October, Buenos Aires says it will ask the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg to impose a temporary halt. Milei has also launched arbitration proceedings under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, calling the project the "plundering" of Argentine resources.

"Argentina will not sit idly by," his office said, accusing Britain of causing "irreversible and irreparable" damage.

The field is estimated to hold 1.7 billion barrels. An Argentine court already ordered work suspended this month pending an environmental review, and Buenos Aires argues the project violates UN resolutions barring unilateral action while the sovereignty dispute remains unresolved.

Britain has occupied the islands since 1833 and rejects Argentina's claim, citing a 2013 referendum in which residents voted to remain a British overseas territory.
