๐ง๐ช๐ช๐บ Belgium Calls on EU to Shield ICC From US Sanctions
Belgium has strongly condemned Washingtonโs sweeping sanctions against the International Criminal Court and is calling for the activation of the EU Blocking Statute to protect the tribunal.
The legislation, introduced in 1996, allows the EU to shield European companies from certain extraterritorial US sanctions by prohibiting compliance with covered restrictions, blocking their enforcement in European courts, and allowing affected businesses to recover damages.
If extended to cover the ICC sanctions, it could prevent European banks, insurers and technology providers from complying with Washingtonโs demands to cut off services to the court.
The proposal would require EU action before the protections could apply to the new sanctions.
