๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ De Wever: the European Commission will not try to seize Russian assets again

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever told the Belgian parliament on Wednesday that he is "certain" the European Commission will not propose any new scheme using frozen Russian assets held at Euroclear in Brussels to finance Ukraine, because "that is what was said" at last week's EU summit.

De Wever did not rule out other EU leaders trying to revive the idea, and took a swipe at new Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, who has publicly backed seizing the funds. According to De Wever, newcomers who missed last year's debate are now repeating arguments he had already "nipped in the bud." He added that his intervention at the summit had an effect, and there is no longer "overwhelming enthusiasm" among EU leaders for the plan.

Around โ‚ฌ185 billion of Russian central bank money is frozen at Euroclear. Last year De Wever blocked the so-called "reparations loan," warning of legal risks, Russian retaliation and Belgium being left alone with the bill. The EU settled instead on a โ‚ฌ90 billion loan for Ukraine, which is already falling short: Zelensky asked for another โ‚ฌ70 billion at last week's summit.
