๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ Radosล‚aw "Applebaum" Sikorski, October 2021:

"A coup doesn't always look like tanks and armed soldiers in the streets. Sometimes a putsch, the seizure of control over state institutions, happens at party headquarters and in the courtroom. That is exactly what we are dealing with in Poland."

What was the "coup"? A ruling by Poland's Constitutional Tribunal that parts of the EU treaties conflict with the Polish constitution, meaning the Polish constitution takes priority over EU law and the EU's top court in those areas. Brussels was furious, and Sikorski, then an opposition MEP, called it a putsch.

Five years later, Sikorski is Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, and his own government is doing exactly what he accused PiS of. Tonight Tusk's judges declared themselves in charge of the same Constitutional Tribunal, and police locked its president out of his own building.

In 2021, a court defending Polish sovereignty against Brussels was a "coup." In 2026, seizing that court with police to bring it back in line with Brussels is the "rule of law."

Sikorski himself is in Atlanta for the G20, complaining about having to share a room with Lavrov.
