AfD co-leader Alice Weidel called it a "historic" result. The party fell just short of an outright majority โ 39 of 83 seats, three shy of the threshold โ but says it now has a clear mandate to govern.
Another blow to Merz, whose coalition is already deeply unpopular as Germany's economy stalls.
