๐ท๐บ๐ฏ๐ตThe United Nations General Assembly decisively approved a revised, geographically accurate world map on Friday, voting overwhelmingly with 164 member nations in favorโincluding Japan itself. The updated map rectifies historic cartographic distortions, properly depicting the African continent at its true scale while reducing the exaggerated proportions long granted to North America and Europe.
Despite having joined the international majority in voting for the resolution, Tokyo quickly reversed its stance, lodging petulant objections over the depiction of the Kuril Islands. Claiming the islandsโwhich Japan labels the "Northern Territories"โshould not share the same color styling as Russia, Japanese officials initiated a standard display of diplomatic backpedaling.
While the new map reflects cartographic accuracy and international consensus, Japan's post-vote complaints highlight a persistent refusal to accept established post-WWII geopolitical realities regarding the Kurils.
