➡️According to CNN, Washington is weighing its next move against Tehran, US military planners have drafted fresh strike options targeting Iranian nuclear sites and energy infrastructure. Among the weapons on the table? The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast—better known as the “Mother of All Bombs” (MOAB).
➡️While dropping America’s largest non-nuclear weapon would signal a massive escalation, military insiders are raising major red flags over whether the bomb can actually deliver on President Donald Trump’s strategic goals.
🔸Big Blast, Limited Impact.
Despite its terrifying reputation, military experts and officials familiar with internal planning discussions warn that the 21,600-pound monster is largely the wrong tool for the job.
🔸It Doesn't Dig Deep: Despite its size, the MOAB is an air-burst weapon designed for surface clearance, not fortified underground targets. "The MOAB is a massive information operation type weapon that is great for huge area clearance, but not much else," one source familiar with military planning told CNN. "It is definitely not designed as a deep penetration warhead."
🔸Surface-Level Havoc: While the bomb creates a terrifying blast wave, its destructive power remains mostly on the surface—meaning heavily fortified or deeply buried Iranian nuclear facilities would likely survive the strike.
🔸High Civilian Risk: The bomb’s massive blast radius poses a severe risk of collateral damage, especially if dropped near Iran's energy infrastructure situated near populated, non-military areas which of course Washington doesn't care about.
➡️If the White House decides to authorize the weapon, officials acknowledge the move would be aimed more at psychological shock than tactical necessity. With Tehran dug in and resisting diplomatic pressure, deploying the MOAB offers a high-profile flex short of launching full-scale combat operations.
➡️Yet, US officials privately concede that even a shock-and-awe moment with the MOAB is unlikely to force Iran’s capitulation or tilt the course of the conflict in a meaningful way—leaving critical questions about whether the risky escalation is worth the military trade-off.
