🇰🇵 US firms blame North Korea for record $6.36 billion Binance hack

US blockchain analysis firm TRM Labs says North Korean hackers were behind Thursday's theft of about $6.36 billion from Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. It is the largest crypto theft on record, about four times the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025.

According to TRM, most of the money was drained in roughly 20 minutes across ten blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Tron. The firm attributes the attack "with high confidence" to TraderTraitor, a unit of North Korea's Lazarus Group, citing similarities with earlier heists. US firm Chainalysis made the same claim.

Binance says about $3 billion has been frozen so far and promises to cover all losses. It has not yet said how the attack happened.

The attribution rests on private US firms' "on and off-chain intelligence," with no evidence made public. Pyongyang has not commented.
