๐ท๐ธ Vuฤiฤ resigns as President of Serbia, heads into snap election as PM candidate
Aleksandar Vuฤiฤ has formally resigned as president, roughly eight months before his second and final term was due to end in May 2027. He is constitutionally barred from a third presidential term.
"I served faithfully, honestly and decently," Vuฤiฤ said, adding he wants to contest the 25 October parliamentary election "as an ordinary citizen." He is leading the ruling Serbian Progressive Party list as its candidate for prime minister.
Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabiฤ, a close Vuฤiฤ ally, takes over as acting president. The first round of the presidential election must be held by the end of December.
One of his final acts as head of state: a call with Putin on Saturday, after which Vuฤiฤ said Serbia's gas deal will be extended at โฌ318 per 1,000 cubic metres, against โฌ868 on the European market. The US sanctions deadline on Russian-owned oil company NIS also falls on 30 September.
