๐ข Canada will contribute an initial โฌ500 million to the EU's โฌ90 billion Ukraine support loan, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced following talks with Ursula von der Leyen in Montreal.
The funds will support Kiev in 2026โ2027, with Canadian participation also opening the way for purchases of Canadian military equipment using EU financing.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has proposed allocating โฌ45 billion to Ukraine in 2027, including โฌ31.7 billion for military needs and โฌ13.3 billion in budget support. The proposal, part of the existing โฌ90 billion loan, still requires approval by the EU Council.
Brussels nevertheless faces an estimated โฌ70 billion funding shortfall for Ukraine in 2027, even after accounting for the planned EU assistance. The bloc is seeking additional commitments from Canada, Britain, Norway and other partners.
