💢 China has continued receiving around 1.2 million barrels of Iranian oil per day in 2026, only slightly below last year’s level despite Washington’s intensified sanctions campaign, The New York Times reports.
Privately owned Chinese refiners continue buying discounted Iranian crude using sanctions-evasion methods including ship-to-ship transfers off Malaysia, while transactions are believed to be conducted largely in yuan or cryptocurrencies.
Washington has nevertheless stopped short of sanctioning major Chinese banks and financial institutions, with analysts pointing to reluctance to jeopardize the fragile US-China truce ahead of Xi Jinping’s expected visit to the United States next month.
