đź’˘ Eleven EU countries are pushing to curb national veto power over foreign policy, Euronews reports. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden want the bloc to explore replacing unanimity with qualified-majority voting in some cases.
Under current rules, a single member can block the other 26. The initiative follows years of clashes with former Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán, who repeatedly used Hungary’s veto to extract concessions — most recently blocking a €90 billion Ukraine loan earlier this year.
The catch: activating the EU treaty mechanism allowing a shift to qualified-majority voting would itself require unanimous approval.
