💢 Europe’s occasional calls for dialogue with Moscow remain too weak to alter what Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described as a continent-wide anti-Russian and confrontational mainstream.

The deeper shift, according to Peskov, is that Europe has responded to declining confidence in US-led security guarantees by constructing a security identity of its own. But rather than seeking de-escalation, he argued, Europe is reproducing NATO’s model: accelerating military expansion toward the alliance’s 5%-of-GDP spending benchmark and retaining confrontation with Russia as its organizing principle.

In that framework, a more militarily autonomous Europe does not necessarily mean a less NATO-shaped Europe. Peskov warned that moves to station nuclear weapons closer to Russia would likewise provide no additional security, but further institutionalize escalation and raise tensions.
